Conceptual Design
Good concepts are not invented. They are derived from strategy.
Before systems are implemented, organizations need a clear model of what should exist and why. Conceptual design creates that model. It translates strategic direction into coherent structures for products, services, and systems—so that design decisions are grounded in purpose rather than preference.
My Perspective
Strategy anchors design decisions
Conceptual work begins with understanding what the organization is trying to achieve. Each design decision should be traceable to that strategic intent.
Concepts describe systems
A concept defines how actors, processes, and systems interact. Interfaces and features are only expressions of that underlying structure.
Design connects strategy and implementation
Conceptual design creates the shared understanding that allows business stakeholders, designers, and engineers to move forward together.
Situations
Organizations typically involve me when:
• strategic initiatives need to be translated into concrete solutions
• new products or services require a coherent concept before development
• teams need a shared model of how a solution should work
• complex initiatives require alignment between business, design, and engineering
• early ideas must be tested against operational and technical realities
Good work starts with a good conversation.
